Brief History of Adidas

Adidas AG is a multinational corporation founded in 1924 in Herzogenaurach, Germany. The company designs and manufactures shoes, clothing, and accessories. Currently, it is the largest manufacturer of sportswear in Europe, and the second-largest in the world.

Adidas AG was founded by Adolf “Adi” Dassler who made sports shoes in his mother’s house. The company later became known as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory after his older brother Rudolf joined the business in 1924.

Dassler shoes gained prominence after they were worn by U.S. sprinter Jesse Owens at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Owens’s success at the Olympics gave Dassler shoes a reputation as the best for sportsmen.

In 1947, the brother split up. Rudolf went on to form a new firm called Ruda, later rebranded to Puma and Dassler formally registered Adidas AG.

Five years later, Adidas introduced the Adidas 1, which was dubbed “The World’s First Intelligent Shoe”. The shoe features a microprocessor capable of performing 5 million calculations per second. These calculations automatically adjusted the shoe’s level of cushioning to suit its environment.

The shoe was powered by a small, user-replaceable battery that could last for about 100 hours of running. Late into 2005, it released a new version of the Adidas 1 that featured several impressive upgrades.

In 2006, Adidas bought Reebok and became the second-largest athletic shoemaker in the world. In the same year, Adidas announced an 11-year deal to become the official NBA sportswear provider.
