List of Accredited Polytechnics in Ghana

Ghana has several tertiary institutions which offer education in various fields of study. However, it is important that you only study in an accredited tertiary institution or your degree will be considered invalid by most employers in Ghana.

To this effect, we have curated a list of accredited polytechnics in Ghana. These polytechnics have all been accredited by the National Accreditation Board of Ghana which is the main body responsible for regulating, supervising, and accrediting tertiary institutions in Ghana.

  1. Tamale Polytechnic

Tamale Polytechnic is one of the 10 polytechnics established in the 10 regions of Ghana. It began as a Trades Training Centre in 1951. It then became the Government Training School in 1954 and was then converted to a junior Technical Institute in 1960.

The school was upgraded to the level of a tertiary institution in 1992 as a result of the Educational Reform Programme and the enactment of the PNDC Law 321 in 1992.

The Polytechnic offers many courses in various fields of study and offers National and Higher Diploma certifications after the completion of any of their courses.

Tamale Polytechnic’s courses are based on disciplines within the following schools

  • The School of Applied Sciences
  • The School of Business
  • The School of Engineering
  • The School of Industrial Arts
  1. Kumasi Technical University

Kumasi Technical University was first established as Kumasi Technical Institute in 1954 to offer craft courses and then converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic in 1963.

Today, it is one of the polytechnics in Ghana upgraded to university status so as to offer quality education in engineering, science technology, applied arts, and technical and vocational training.

The Polytechnic offers several educational programmes which cut across various disciplines. These programmes include

  1. Accra Technical University

Accra Technical University began as the Accra Technical Institute. It was upgraded to the Accra Polytechnic in 1963 and then in 2016, it was converted to Accra Technical University and tasked with providing technical training with the aim of producing world-class graduates conversant with the theory and the practical aspects of the courses they studied.

The technical university is made up of three (3) schools which make up the fifteen departments of the university. Through these departments, Accra Technical University offers the following academic programmes

  • Bachelor of Technology
  • HND Programmes
  • Diploma Programmes
  • Certificate Courses
  1. Cape Coast Technical University

Cape Coast Technical University is one of the tertiary institutions upgraded from a polytechnic to the status of a technical university.

As a technical university, Cape Coast Technical University provides higher education in engineering, science technology, applied arts, and technical and vocational training.

The university has 3 faculties, thirteen departments, and offers the following academic programmes

  • Bachelor of Technology programmes (Top-Ups)
  • HND Programmes
  • Professional Diploma Programmes
  • Diploma Programmes
  1. Koforidua Technical University

Koforidua Technical University, previously known as Koforidua Polytechnic is one of the technical universities established in the 10 regions of Ghana. The university offers HND and Non-HND programmes in its 5 faculties and institute.

These faculties include

  • Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology
  • Faculty of Business and Management Studies
  • Faculty of Engineering
  • Faculty of Built and Natural Environment
  • Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences

The university’s Institute of Open and Distance Learning was established to accommodate students who wish to study in the school from different locations.

  1. HO Technical University

Just like other technical universities in Ghana, Ho Technical University began as the Ho Technical Institute when it was first established in 1968. At the time, its primary objective was to provide pre-technical education.

In 1986, it was converted into a Polytechnic. Currently, the university offers Master of Technology, Bachelor of Technology, Higher National Diploma and Non-Tertiary Programmes through its six faculties and schools.

  1. Takoradi Technical University

Takoradi Technical University was first established as a Government Technical Institute in 1954 and later became a polytechnic after the passage of the Polytechnic Law of 1992.

In 2016, Takoradi Polytechnic was converted to Takoradi Technical University and tasked with providing higher education in engineering, science technology, applied arts, and technical and vocational training.

Currently, the school offers Master of Technology, Bachelor of Technology, Higher National Diploma and Pre-HND Access Programmes in the following faculties.

  • Faculty of Applied Sciences
  • Faculty of Business Studies
  • Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology
  • Faculty of Built and Natural Environment
  1. Sunyani Technical University

Sunyani Technical University is one of the former polytechnics upgraded to the status of technical universities in Ghana.

As a technical university, it’s the main objective is to provide tertiary educations in the fields of commerce, manufacturing, science technology, applied arts, and applied social sciences.

It offers Bachelor of Technology, HND and Diploma programmes in the following faculties

  • Faculty of Applied Science and Technology
  • Faculty of Built Environment and Applied Art
  • Faculty of Business and Management
  • Faculty of Engineering
  1. Bolgatanga Polytechnic

The enactment of the PNDC Law 321 in 1992 saw the establishment of various polytechnics in Ghana and among them was Bolgatanga Polytechnic The polytechnic was established in 1999 but began its academic activities in 2003

Currently, the polytechnic has 3 schools and 12 departments. Its schools include

  • School of Business and Management Studies
  • School of Applied Sciences and Arts
  • School of Engineering
  1. Wa Polytechnic

Wa Polytechnic was established in 1999 as the last of the ten regional polytechnics in Ghana. It began its academic programmes in 2003 when it admitted its first batch of tertiary students to pursue HND programmes.
