University of Ghana School of Nursing Requirements

University of Ghana School of Nursing is one of the prestigious nursing schools in Ghana. It is a part of the University of Ghana and it offers basic nursing training to aspiring nurses in various fields of study.

If you wish to get admitted into the school, there are several eligibility requirements you must meet. The University of Ghana School of Nursing requirements is quite similar to the general requirements for other courses offered at the University of Ghana. University of Ghana School of Nursing

The University of Ghana School of Nursing was initially established as a Post Basic Nursing Institution in 1963 and was tasked with the preparation of Diploma awarded Nurse Tutors for basic nursing training institutions. Later on, the school started offering certificate courses in Nursing Management and diploma courses in Nursing Service Administration.

In 1980, it became the Department of Nursing and was placed under the Faculties of Science and Social Studies. It was later upgraded to a School and made a part of the College of Health Sciences.

Currently, the School of Nursing is divided into five departments through which it offers undergraduate and graduate programmes.

Its departments include

  • Department of Mental Health Nursing
  • Department of Community Health Nursing
  • Department of Maternal and Child Health Nursing
  • Department of Adult Health Nursing
  • Department of Research, Education, and Administration

The graduate programmes offered in the school include

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
  • Master of Science (MSc)

University of Ghana School of Nursing Undergraduate Programmes

The School of Nursing runs a 4-year undergraduate programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Nursing. Students apply for this degree will graduate in one of the following fields

  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Paediatric Nursing
  • Midwifery
  • General Nursing
  • Community Health Nursing

In the undergraduate programme, the student will be exposed to the theory and practical aspects of the course. The 4-year programme is divided into 8 semesters with two semesters per academic year.

In each semester, there are 16 weeks of nursing training and each student is required to undertake 3 weeks clinical during each semester and 6 weeks clinicals at the end of every academic year. The clinical training aims to familiarize the student with the practical aspect of the course.

University of Ghana School of Nursing Graduate Programmes

The University of Ghana School of Nursing offers several graduate degree programmes to students who wish to further their education and gain more experience and knowledge in their fields of study. These graduate degree programmes include

Master of Philosophy (M. Phil)/Master of Science (MSc) in Nursing

The Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) in Nursing programmes are run for a period of 12 months and 24 months duration respectively.

Paediatric in Nursing programme – MPhil

The Paediatric Nursing programme is a 12-month certificate programme that provides theory and practical training for students through the incorporation of didactic teaching-learning sessions, paediatric skill development, interactive workshops with case-based training, intensive clinical placement opportunities in diverse practice settings, and simulation.

  • Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana

For the Paediatric Nursing programme, the School of Nursing receives sponsorship from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and support from by SickKids Foundation of Canada.

University of Ghana School of Nursing Requirements

Undergraduate Requirements

Applicants who wish to apply for the undergraduate programmes at the University of Ghana School of Nursing must meet the following requirements.

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders must have passes in the three core subjects comprising English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Science or they must have passes from three elective subjects from the following.

  • Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Elective Mathematics
  • Physics, General Agriculture & Chemistry
  • Three General Arts Electives
  • Two General Arts Electives subjects plus Food & Nutrition
  • Any three of the Electives: Chemistry, Management in Living, Economics, Food & Nutrition, General Knowledge in Art and French.

WASSCE / SSSCE Holders will be admitted at Level 100

Diploma Holders

  • Applicants must be holders of Diploma in Nursing Education / Administration from a reputable university and should have a minimum of B+ average or second class upper.
  • Applicants must of holders of Diploma in Nursing from a reputable institution of nursing with a minimum of CGPA of 3.25.

Diploma Holders will be admitted at Level 200

Foreign Applicants

International students will have their results verified by NAB / University of Ghana to ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements before they will be considered for admission.

Graduate Requirements

Applicants for who wish to apply for the Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Nursing programmes must meet the following requirements

  • All applicants must have a BA/BSc in Nursing with a minimum of second class lower division,
  • All applicants must be a registered nurse and practiced nursing for not less than 2 years and
  • All applicants must pass a selection interview

How to Apply For University of Ghana School of Nursing

Ghanaian Applicants

Ghanaian students are required to purchase an e-voucher through which they will complete their registration. These applicants can obtain their e-voucher from any of the following banks for GHc200.00

Diploma/HND degree applicants will be required to scan and attach their Diploma/HND transcripts and certified copies of “O” and “A” Level certificates/result slips. The scanned documents should be in a single PDF or WORD document and attached to the application form.

International Students and Ghanaians Applying from Abroad

International Students and Ghanaians Applying from Abroad are not required to buy the e-voucher, but they will complete their application forms online.
