A profile of the top 3 ranked universities in Ghana 2019

We decided to tell you a bit about the top 3 universities in the university ranking in Ghana in 2019 to help make your search easier.

University of Ghana, Legon

This university is the oldest of all the universities in Ghana. It is also the largest by land mass in the whole of Ghana. It was originally established as an affiliate of the University of London as the University College of the Gold Coast. This university which attained full university status in 1961 has a total student population of over 42,000 made up of local and international students. The university offers courses in law, medicine, basic sciences, engineering, social sciences, and agriculture at different levels of study. The university is based in the city of Legon, northeast of Accra.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

This university is the largest in the Ashanti and Kumasi Metropolis established in 1949. The first admissions were provided students in 1951 though they resumed studies in 1952. At this time the university was still an affiliate of the University of London. It gained full university status in 1961 and has grown steadily since then. Currently, the university sits 8 miles away from Kumasi on a 7 square mile property. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in several courses and the current population is a little over 40,000.

University of Cape Coast

This university is set in the city of Cape Coast and was established in 1962 to satisfy a huge need for skilled and qualified educational manpower. The aim was to train and develop graduate teachers so they could impart knowledge in second tier teacher training colleges. At the time of the establishment of this university, there were two other universities but they didn’t focus on this kind of training. The university has since grown to accommodate the training of doctors, agrarians, administrators, and education planners. The university has a high population estimated to be over 70,000 of local and international students.
